Pittsburgh is a city built on water and hills. It grows out of the point where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio — the wedge of land at Point State Park that locals still call the Golden Triangle and that holds the downtown skyline. Steep wooded ridges and river valleys carve the city into fiercely distinct neighborhoods, stitched together by more bridges than any city on earth and a pair of century-old inclines that still climb Mount Washington for the postcard view. Coming from the flat sprawl of South Texas, the terrain is the first thing you feel: downtown's Golden Triangle and the market stalls of the Strip District along the Allegheny; Lawrenceville and Bloomfield — the old Little Italy — turned into restaurant rows; leafy, upscale Shadyside and Squirrel Hill; Oakland, the university and hospital core where the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning towers over the Carnegie museums; the South Side flats along East Carson Street; and the North Shore, where the ballpark and the football stadium sit right on the water.

The economy that once ran on steel has been rebuilt around "eds and meds" and, increasingly, robots. UPMC — the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center — is now the region's largest employer, and together with Pitt, Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne, and Highmark it anchors a workforce very different from the mills Andrew Carnegie built. Carnegie Mellon's world-leading robotics and computer-science programs seeded a genuine tech cluster: Google occupies the old Nabisco factory at Bakery Square in East Liberty, Duolingo is headquartered here, and "Robotics Row" in the Strip District runs from autonomy and self-driving firms to Astrobotic, which builds lunar landers a few blocks from the produce warehouses. The older corporate names still stand too — PNC's headquarters tower and BNY Mellon downtown, PPG's glass castle on Market Square, the Heinz ketchup heritage now under Kraft Heinz, U.S. Steel, Dick's Sporting Goods out by the airport, and Westinghouse up in Cranberry.

What surprises most transplants is how livable it all is. Pittsburgh routinely lands near the top of "most livable U.S. city" lists, and the black-and-gold civic religion — the Steelers and their Terrible Towels, the Penguins at PPG Paints Arena, the Pirates at riverfront PNC Park — gives newcomers an instant tribe. Weekends fill with the Carnegie and Andy Warhol museums, Phipps Conservatory, riverfront bike trails, and a food culture built on Primanti Bros. sandwiches, pierogies, and church-basement fish fries. For a family leaving San Antonio, the cost math is worth doing carefully: home prices in Pittsburgh are famously reasonable for a major metro, but Pennsylvania levies a state income tax plus a local earned-income tax collected by your municipality and school district — taxes Texas simply doesn't have — so a paycheck that felt one way in Bexar County will be withheld differently here. It's usually a manageable trade for the housing and the salaries, but run the numbers before the move, not after.
