San Antonio to St. Paul Movers

St. Paul is the quieter, older half of the Twin Cities and Minnesota's capital, sitting on the east bank of the Mississippi where the river bends through downtown bluffs. Where Minneapolis feels like the first city of the West, St. Paul has long been called the last city of the East — more Victorian, more Catholic, more neighborhood-bound. Its signature is Summit Avenue, the longest continuous stretch of preserved Victorian homes in the country, running four and a half miles from the Cathedral of Saint Paul past the James J. Hill House and F. Scott Fitzgerald's old rowhouse toward the river. Around it fan the districts locals sort themselves into: Cathedral Hill and Crocus Hill with their mansions and brownstones, the boutiques and cafes of Grand Avenue, family-filled Macalester-Groveland ("Mac-Groveland") and Highland Park on the southwest side, leafy St. Anthony Park up by the university's agricultural campus, Como Park around its lake, zoo, and conservatory, the West Seventh/Fort Road corridor toward the breweries, and Lowertown downtown — a restored warehouse arts district anchored by Union Depot, the Saturday farmers market, and CHS Field.

As the seat of state government and Ramsey County, St. Paul runs on a different engine than its twin. The Minnesota State Capitol complex makes government the region's steady anchor, and the city is a corporate headquarters town in its own right: Ecolab and Securian Financial tower over downtown, 3M's sprawling campus sits just northeast in Maplewood, Land O'Lakes is up in Arden Hills, and the medical-device world Minnesotans call "Medical Alley" reaches into the east metro through Abbott's former St. Jude Medical operations. Higher education is unusually dense here too — the University of St. Thomas, Macalester College, Hamline, Concordia, and Metropolitan State all sit inside the city, alongside Regions Hospital and a deep base of insurance, printing, and food companies. It gives St. Paul a steady, white-collar, college-town texture rather than a boom-and-bust one.

The culture leans civic and homegrown. The Xcel Energy Center downtown is home to the NHL's Minnesota Wild; the Ordway Center and the Fitzgerald Theater carry the performing arts; the Science Museum of Minnesota and the Minnesota History Center sit above the river; and the great Minnesota State Fair unfolds each August just up the road in Falcon Heights, on the seam between the two cities. Summers belong to the Mississippi bluff trails, Como Lake, and the St. Paul Saints at CHS Field. On cost of living, the trade-off from San Antonio is real: both cities are affordable by big-metro standards, and St. Paul housing generally runs a touch gentler than Minneapolis across the river, but Minnesota charges a state income tax that Texas does not, and property taxes and winter heating bills climb well above what the same budget covers in South Texas. Most newcomers weigh that against stronger Upper-Midwest wages, walkable old neighborhoods, and public services Minnesotans fund generously.
