St. Petersburg is the Gulf-facing half of the Tampa Bay area, and it wears its personality very differently than either Tampa across the water or landlocked San Antonio. The economy leans on corporate headquarters rather than tourism alone. Raymond James Financial anchors a large campus in the Carillon office park, electronics-manufacturing giant Jabil — a Fortune 500 company — is headquartered here, Duke Energy Florida runs its operations from downtown, and Home Shopping Network (HSN) has broadcast from St. Pete for decades. Health care is a major employer through Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital and Bayfront Health, and the downtown waterfront's Innovation District has clustered marine and earth science — the USF College of Marine Science, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, USGS, and SRI — into one of the country's densest ocean-science hubs. The Tampa Bay Rays play baseball at Tropicana Field, and the arts economy runs deep, from the Salvador Dalí Museum and the Chihuly Collection to the SHINE mural festival that has turned whole blocks into open-air galleries.

Like Texas, Florida levies no state income tax, so a San Antonio paycheck keeps its familiar shape. Everyday costs generally run higher, though — home prices in sought-after pockets like the Old Northeast, Snell Isle, and downtown have climbed well past what the same square footage fetches in San Antonio, and insurance is the line item that surprises Texas buyers most. Because much of the peninsula sits in a flood or storm-surge evacuation zone, windstorm coverage and separate flood coverage can both be costly and are worth pricing before you commit to an address. Most newcomers decide the walkable downtown, the Gulf beaches, the sunshine, and the year-round outdoor life more than balance the math.
