From there the corridor climbs out of the Hill Country's limestone and live oaks, crosses the Balcones Escarpment, threads the New Braunfels–San Marcos–Kyle–Buda string, spans the Colorado River through the downtown Austin deck, then rolls past Round Rock, Georgetown, Jarrell, and the historic village of Salado onto the open Blackland Prairie of Bell County. About Temple, TX
Temple began in 1881 as a railroad town — laid out by the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway and named for its chief engineer, Bernard Moore Temple — and for decades it was known simply as the city the railroad built. The modern engine, though, is medicine. Temple is the headquarters and flagship campus of Baylor Scott & White Health, the largest not-for-profit health system in Texas, whose roots trace to the Scott & White clinic founded here in 1897. Between the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center–Temple, McLane Children's Medical Center, and the Central Texas VA's Olin E. Teague Veterans' Medical Center, the city holds one of the densest concentrations of healthcare jobs anywhere between Austin and Dallas.
