Burlington is Vermont's largest city and still a small one — a walkable college town of tree-lined streets stacked on a hillside above Lake Champlain, with the Adirondacks rising across the water. For its size, Burlington punches well above its weight economically. The UVM Medical Center is the largest employer in the entire state, anchoring a healthcare and teaching hub alongside the University of Vermont and Champlain College downtown. A few miles out, GlobalFoundries runs a major semiconductor fab in Essex Junction, and Beta Technologies is building electric aircraft next to the Burlington airport in South Burlington. Add homegrown names like Burton Snowboards, headquartered in the city, Dealer.com, and Ben & Jerry's just up the road, layered on top of a deep bench of state-government, banking, and outdoor-industry jobs. Daily life revolves around the Church Street Marketplace — a brick pedestrian mall of shops and restaurants — the waterfront bike path, the farmers market, and quick access to world-class skiing at Stowe, Sugarbush, Bolton Valley, and Smugglers' Notch, plus sailing and paddling on Lake Champlain all summer.

The honest trade-off coming from San Antonio is space and inventory. Chittenden County is one of the tightest, most sought-after housing markets in the Northeast, and the historic homes that give Burlington its charm tend to be older and smaller than what the same budget buys in San Antonio or the Hill Country — expect more three-story walk-ups and compact city lots and fewer sprawling new-build floor plans. Many households moving north end up downsizing, or settling a little outside the core in South Burlington's newer subdivisions off Dorset Street, to keep more square footage while staying close to the jobs, the lake, and downtown. Winters are also a real budget line here in a way they never were in Texas, so heating, snow gear, and a vehicle that handles ice all factor into the move.
