About Fresno, CA
Fresno sits at the geographic center of California, the largest city in the San Joaquin Valley and the fifth-largest in the state. It is a place of established, tree-lined neighborhoods more than a single skyline. Old Fig Garden, with its mature canopy and mid-century estates, and the historic Tower District, built around the 1939 Tower Theatre and lined with independent restaurants, bars, and theaters, give the city much of its character. North Fresno — Woodward Park, Bullard, and the bluffs above the San Joaquin River — holds much of the newer, family-oriented housing, while the neighboring city of Clovis keeps its own small-town Old Town district and highly rated schools just to the northeast. Fresno's economy grows out of the land around it — Fresno County is one of the most productive agricultural counties in the nation, and growing, packing, and food processing underpin everything from Foster Farms to the region's grape, almond, and tomato operations. Healthcare is the other pillar: Community Medical Centers is the area's largest employer, alongside Saint Agnes Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente, and UCSF Fresno trains physicians for the whole valley. Add California State University, Fresno (Fresno State), a large county and city government presence, distribution centers strung along CA-99, and the construction headquarters of the California High-Speed Rail project — Fresno is the literal midpoint of the line — and the job market is broader than the farm-town reputation suggests.
For a household leaving San Antonio, Fresno's biggest draw is the Sierra Nevada at its back door: Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks are all within a couple of hours, and Shaver and Huntington Lakes put boating and mountain air within an easy weekend, while the Monterey coast, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles each sit about three hours out. The trade-off is cost. Fresno has a hot, dry Mediterranean climate that is a real change from San Antonio's humidity. Summers (June through September) are long and very hot, with daytime highs often running from the high 90s past 100 degrees, but the air is dry rather than sticky. Rain is scarce for most of the year and falls almost entirely in winter. The season to plan around is winter itself: from December into February the San Joaquin Valley is known for dense "Tule fog," a ground fog that can cut visibility to a few car lengths on CA-99 and slow a valley delivery morning. Air quality is another honest consideration — the valley's ring of mountains traps summer ozone and, in late summer and fall, wildfire smoke drifting out of the Sierra.
