March Air Reserve Base sits just southeast in Moreno Valley, a familiar tie for the many military families relocating out from San Antonio's JBSA installations.

For a household leaving San Antonio, the cost math is the thing to plan around. Riverside is the affordable corner of Southern California — considerably cheaper than coastal Los Angeles or Orange County, which is precisely why so many Californians move inland to it — but it still runs well above San Antonio, with home prices and rents markedly higher and California's state income tax to reckon with where Texas has none. What that trade buys is a real, walkable city center with a century of history, plus an afternoon's reach to Orange County beaches, the Palm Springs desert, and the ski-and-hike country of Big Bear and Idyllwild.
